John P. Jewett & Company is established.

Founded by the former Salem bookseller it is located on today’s City Hall Plaza (then 17 – 19 Cornhill). Initially a publisher of religious and text books, the firm grows substantially after its publishing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852.* It opens a large bookstore at today’s 263 Washington Street (then 117 Washington Street) in 1854.
